Iranian Masses Overwhelmingly Participate in Un-Islamic New Year Tradition Despite Regime's Prohibition
KRSI, Los Angeles (March 18, 2003)— Chahar-shanbe-souri is one of the pre-Islamic Iranian ceremonies celebrated prior to the Norouz, the Iranian New Year. This ceremony is celebrated by jumping over burning bushes and setting off firecrackers, and is particularly popular among the youth. Although the Islamic regime has been changing its stance regarding the celebration of the pre-Islamic and the Iranian national holiday of Norouz, it has been almost consistent in its opposition to the Chahar-shanbe-souri ceremony. The clergies condemn every year the practice of this ‘pagan’ ceremony, and, therefore, it has been always a time of tension and conflict with the Islamic regime since its establishment. At the time of the ceremony, the Iranian national television broadcasted this year two famous Hollywood movies, “Harry Potter” and “Face Off,” in order to attract viewers and to avoid their appearance on the streets.
